Performance improvement in the manufacture of hollow glassware: The best practice of the Regional Competence Center of Autonomous Non-Commercial Organization “Industrial Development Center of the Leningrad Region”
Glass industry enterprises may face defects and poor performance during the manufacture of finished products.
The main reasons are:
- Insufficient accuracy of technological parameters and equipment.
- The ways of equipment readjustment and repair are not optimized.
The members of the Regional Competence Center of the Leningrad Region, together with the employees of Petersburg Glass, LLC, have successfully solved these problems, increasing the productivity of the line by 7%.
They have implemented only a few solutions that have allowed them to reduce the time of equipment readjustment and increase the line productivity:
- The development of a transition plan from one type of a product to another.
- Equipment inspection and making a list of critical equipment.
- Creation of a checklist for the acceptance and delivery of shifts and technological equipment.
- Training of adjusters to work with the checklist.
To achieve these goals, the following tools were used: “Production Analysis”, “Spaghetti Diagram”, “Quick Readjustment “, “5S”, “5 Why”.
Thanks to these tools, they have identified and eliminated problems that previously hindered performance improvement.
For optimization, it is necessary:
- To plan the transition to a different range in advance together with the involved departments
- To carry out regular maintenance of the equipment
- To develop and implement a checklist.
These measures can significantly increase performance, reduce readjustment time and improve product quality.
